Making friends at Tashinga...

rhino and human making friends -- July 1998

Here Transfer, a research scout at Tashinga, makes friends with Mbizhi, when she is about one year old. It is important to note that all friendships between baby rhinos and humans at Tashinga are temporary. Once a rhino starts to become older, contact with humans needs to gradually become more and more limited. This is the only way to make their release into the wild successful. Prior to final release, the rhinos will need to learn that humans cannot be depended upon for food nor friendship. In the wild, they will need to be independent and solitary as is their true nature. They will also need to learn to keep their distance from humans to protect themselves from potential poachers.

They still have a lot of growing up to do....
